City extends public participation period for Traffic by-law amendments

Interested and affected parties now have until 7 November 2025 to have their say on the proposed amendments to the existing by-law.
The public participation process started on 19 September 2025.
With the extension, persons still wanting to submit comments on the proposed amendments to the City’s Traffic By-law have until 7 November 2025.
‘The process has generated quite a bit of public interest, with at least 120 submissions already received. Given the interest, we have decided to extend the deadline to ensure that all interested parties have ample opportunity to make their submissions. As indicated at the start of the process, the amendments adopt a no tolerance approach to reckless driving behaviour, regulating both the private and public transportation road users,’ said Safety and Security Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Councillor Mzwakhe Nqavashe.

It is envisioned that they will:
• help create a safer, more orderly transport system
• encourage responsible driver behaviour, and ensure vehicle safety across the city’s roads
• strengthen the rules around public transport operations and road usage
• curb reckless driving and reduce the risks faced by road users
